Surat – the city where the world's diamonds come to life

There are places you never forget. For me, Surat in India is one of them. I have worked with diamonds, gemstones and jewelry manufacturing for more than 30 years. Visiting Surat with my son Viktor, also a gemologist trained at AIGS in Bangkok, was especially meaningful.
The city where around 90% of the world's diamonds are polished
Industry estimates often say that around 90% of the world's diamonds by number are cut and polished in Surat. The diamonds are mined elsewhere, but many acquire their final brilliance here. The next diamond you see in a jewelry store may have passed through the hands of a craftsman in Surat.
A city that surprised me
Surat, in Gujarat, is recognized for its cleanliness. Gujarat has strict alcohol prohibition laws, with exceptions and permits, and a strong vegetarian food tradition. Local customs coexist with a truly international industry.
Surat Diamond Bourse
Standing with Viktor outside this enormous complex was unforgettable. With approximately 660,000 square meters of floor space and more than 4,700 office units, it is among the world's largest office buildings. The project aims to bring diamond businesses together, although attracting occupants has proved challenging.

The diamond-cutting department – where craftsmanship comes alive
We watched skilled specialists working with remarkable concentration. A rough diamond must be examined and carefully planned before cutting. Every decision affects its beauty and value. Even after three decades in the trade, this craftsmanship still impresses me. Viktor and I discussed proportions, symmetry, polish and light performance. A high color or clarity grade cannot compensate for a poor cut. Cut is what gives a diamond much of its life.

The people behind every diamond
We often talk about carats, certificates and prices. Yet every polished stone represents people who have spent years developing their eyes, hands and judgment. A diamond is more than an inventory number.
Modern technology meets traditional skills
Digital planning, advanced equipment and precision tools have transformed the trade since I began manufacturing jewelry in 1995. But technology remains a tool. Experience and pride in craftsmanship still matter.

Two generations, one passion
I never imagined that one day I would visit a major diamond center with my own son, who also became a gemologist. I bring decades of experience; Viktor brings the perspective of a new generation. We share the belief that knowledge, quality and trust come first.
What it means for our customers
I share this journey because I want you to know who you are buying from. I have spent more than 30 years studying diamonds, working with manufacturers and following the industry. At Diamanter.org, our extensive selection matters less than knowing how to choose the right stone. I want you to pay for the diamond and craftsmanship, not unnecessary overhead or branding. My aim is to offer the best prices in the market without compromising quality.

Why I still love diamonds
What stays with me is not just the vast exchange or the machinery, but the people, their skills and the joy of sharing it with Viktor. A diamond is nature's creation, refined by human knowledge and craftsmanship.
